Chief with Headdress, #2

"Sachem" meaning chief paramount is a symbol of strength and depth. Western Red Cedar, a choice wood for First Nations people on the west coast of BC, has been used for centuries for art, tools, and survival.

This hanging wood sculpture of an Indian Chief in Headdress was designed and carved by Metchosin, BC artist Norm Moyen.  After carving this piece, it is wood burned with care. Brushing and cleaning away the burned areas gives rise to the unique grain pattern and characteristics of the wood. This technique creates effects that look much like real feathers on the headdress and it also creates a soft vintage leather-like look for the Chief's robes.
