Greatly inspired by the natural beauty of the Western Coast of Vancouver Island, Allison Tremain often represents in her work the landscape and wildlife of the area. The artist tells us that the Ucluelet Aquarium is also a constant source of inspiration; visiting it allows her to get closer to some of the marine life she could not otherwise study.

Asking her about this specific print, Allison explains to us how it is based on a photograph she took of "Barbara", the resident octopus, as she was being fed. It inspired the artist to capture the movement of rolling tentacles and pulsating body of the octopus.

Each color in the image is created by carving a soft rubber pad, rolling ink onto it and pressing paper to the block. This process is repeated for each color until the image is complete. Layer by layer, this process involves taking risk with unconventional colors. On this print, the artist plays with the contrast between the blue, red and green color palette to create this vibrant print; but she also create contrast by superposing the organic shape of the octopus and to a geometric background.
