Sea Serpent Rattle
The sea serpent belongs to the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation artist Cecil Dawson's family. The serpent was caught in a fish weir, and since then has been used as a secondary crest of his family. It is the connection to the supernatural two headed sea serpent called Sisuitl, who can transform itself into many forms. Design elements of the serpent are explored in a spiral pattern encircling the hand-carved and painted yellow cedar rattle.
