Whale Spoon
This is a soapberry spoon, used to stir soapberries into a flavourful foamy lather called 'Indian Ice Cream'. Soapberries are not found everywhere on the west coast; for this reason the spoons were used as a trading item. This particular one is carved from Western Red Cedar and painted with whale and raven crests by master carver and artist Cecil Dawson of Kwakwaka'wakw Nation.
