Gold Mine Drift

'Gold Mine Drift' is an acrylic painting on canvas by Ucluelet, BC artist Joshua Smolders. The painting depicts piles of driftwood massed near the gold mine trail at Florencia Bay in Pacific Rim National Park. Set under a gloomy overcast sky, the sun-bleached logs represent bones of the clear-cut logging industry. This painting is a fitting metaphor, since driftwood consists primarily of logs that escaped from the booms of the forestry industry, cast adrift on open ocean only to find their way to the Pacific Northwest coastline and its beaches.

Painted image continues around canvas sides for hanging without a frame.
