Native Thunderbird Platter
The mystical Thunderbird holds strength, power and beauty in this one of a kind designer platter created in fused glass by glass artist Shannon Shepherd.
The creating of Thunderbird involves 6 layers of glass. Two layers are the actual platter, a black one for the platter bottom and a white sheet of glass for the upper surface. The Thunderbird itself consists of 4 distinct layers as you can see by the contrast of black and white. Each piece is cut individually and layered one piece of glass on top of another. It is then placed in a kiln heated to 1470%. At this temperature the glass melts into each other, called fusing. This, along with a cooling down period takes about 15 hours.
To create the platter shape, the plate is placed back in the kiln for another 15 hours. This time it had been placed on a mold, the shape the heated glass will slump into.
