"San Josef Bay is located just about as remote as you can get here on the island, roughly 70km across the island from Port Hardy down a rough logging road followed by a 45 min hike. Danish settlers tried to pioneer the area in the late 1800’s and early to mid 1900’s, making a living mostly from fishing and trapping. But due to the government refusing to put in a road to Holberg and the oncoming war, the area was deserted.
This rugged coastline is very much like the Pacific Rim, although it remains untouched due to its remoteness. Things you’ll find at San Jo are wind contorted trees, wild rock formations and very unsettled skies. An artist’s playground.
What drew me to paint this piece was the constantly changing skies, the ruggedness of the rocks, the sunshine managing to poke through to cast very interesting shadows from nearby spruces on the sand, and clearly the bonsai tree which makes a wild statement."
