"Through a lifetime of catching and handling Salmon, I have gained a great appreciation for this creature. Through my artwork I hope to bring attention to the Salmon and promote awareness for the need to protect it's (and our) habitat. This season I have created several pieces using acrylics on cotton rag paper, heavy duck canvas and a few on Yupo synthetic paper. All using the Gyotaku style fish rubbing technique from the real Salmon that I caught with a Gill net. In the canvas pieces I dyed the canvas with procion mix dyes to produce some very vibrant colors and contrasts, layering the Salmon prints and gyotaku images taken from real seaweed. The results of this process yields an image that is an exact real size of the fish and its surrounding environment. Enjoy these pieces and consider your daily actions and how you may directly or indirectly effect the survival of the Salmon." - Doug Blackwell -
