Bio

Master carver from the Huu-ay-aht First nations, George Nookemus was born in Port Alberni, on Vancouver Island to the Huu-ay-aht Master Basket Weaver Mabel Nookemus, daughter of the late Louisa Johnson who was also a master weaver.

George applies his carving skills/technique under the teachings of his late father Edward. His style is very Huu-ay-aht and has a very strong cultural message.

George examines each piece of cedar and receives spiritual visions of what will be on that particular piece of wood. He then applies his skillful hands with his tools and transforms it into the beautiful creature or figure that he had envisioned earlier. Each piece is unique unto itself with other transformations within the carving.
