Bio
John McKenzie lived most of his youth in Tofino on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. When he was 16, his family moved to Victoria where John finished schooling and began an apprenticeship at VMD and later joined the Saanich Fire Department.
John has always enjoyed working with wood, from repairing things to creating pieces of furniture and building houses. When his oldest grandson showed an interest and talent in wood, they began to work together in John's garage creating gifts for family and friends from Yew Wood john had collected
The Yew Wood John uses mainly comes from the Tofino area which he left to dry at least two years. This Vancouver Island hard wood is rich in colour and wood grain pattern. John finishes each piece with tung oil, giving his unique designs a soft silky feeling and warm glow.
