Bio

Tom Shardlow, AFCA, SCA

Tom Shardlow’s artwork was recognized early receiving awards and media attention in High School. He later studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr School of Art and Design) before working in advertising doing art layouts and copy writing. After attending UBC, Tom worked as a field research biologist where he was fortunate to have traveled to many of British Columbia’s wild places. These travels inspired him to document on canvas and paper what he saw and felt.

His drawings and illustrations have appeared in book form, magazines, and newspapers, and he completed a series of commissioned drawings for Fitzhenry and Whiteside publishers. His paintings have won multiple awards and are held in major private collections lending to the National Gallery in Ottawa. Tom’s work has appeared in over 60 juried exhibitions and he is represented by several British Columbia galleries .

He is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA), a Signature member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (AFCA), and Past President of it’s Nanaimo Chapter. Tom lives with his wife, Sue, on Vancouver Island.

Artist Statement

“My works are based on my love of the wilderness. I see nature as not only beautiful and nurturing, but also as remorseless and uncompromising. I convey this dichotomy in an unsentimental way in my landscapes. Compositional elements take priority over representational concerns as I try to engage the viewer and portray the landscapes shifting temperaments.”
