Bio
"Art has always been a large part of my life. From the time I could hold a crayon I was always drawing and creating. When I was eight, my mom plopped a lump of clay in front of me and told me to 'make something'. That became a defining moment in my life, I was forever hooked on the three dimensional art.
After graduating high school, I studied Graphic Design and Applied Photography at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario.
Sixteen years ago, I moved to Vancouver Island, a mecca for artists. I found myself surrounded by every art form imaginable and I began experimenting with three dimensional work again. After working with wood, clay and stone, I finally discovered working with recycled fabric with mixed media has engaged my passion." - Kris Walker -
The construction of Kris's sculptural pieces begin with a wire armature wrapped in foil. Recycled fabrics that have been soaked in a hardening medium is then wrapped around the armature. The hardening medium drys slowly, allowing her time to manipulate the fabric and figure into the desired shape. Once the figure is dry, this process is applied again, this time applying hair, clothing and detail. When the piece is completely dry she the applies layers of paint and her signature metallics with finishing coats of varnish.
Artist Statement
"The process as in any artistic endeavor begins with inspiration. As a resident of Vancouver Island I am surrounded by nature, beauty and find many of my bases for my sculptures while beach-combing. Sitting by the ocean, its easy to imagine a mermaid raising from the depths and sunning herself on a nearby rock.My child figures are inspired by watching my young daughter at play. All the rest are simply paying homage to the simple things in life that we often take for granted, sitting by a fire, dancing or drawing a picture in the sand.
I am so grateful to be living in such a beautiful place with inspiration at every turn and blessed to have friends and family who believe in me and further inspire me." - Kris Walker -
