Dolphin Feast Bowl

This bowl is made out of red alder and is one of four large bowls the artist made in 2010/2011, which he calls 'west coast feast bowls'. These are White-sided Dolphins, a species often seen offshore. While the bowl's outside is finished with shoe polish, non-toxic wood ash and bees-wax were used on the inside. Adrian has made many bowls previously, and this particular series was directly inspired by the work of the late Henry Nola. Henry was an almost legendary west coast carver who became a master at his craft, carving numerous large ornate bowls and totem poles over the years. Adrian learned much of what he knows about bowl carving from Henry. The large, curved hook knife Adrian uses to help round out the inside of each bowl was made by Henry.

Aside from using a power saw to cut down the required tree and reduce the trunk to manageable size, each bowl in entirely carved by hand. Shaping the outside is done with an adze; the inside is then hollowed out using large gouges and a mallet. Further shaping is done with a rasp, hook knives of varying shapes and sizes, and occasionally small gouges. The rim of this Dolphin Feast Bowl is inlaid with abalone (mother of pearl).
