About This Category
Symbol - strength, determination, endurance
There are several different species of salmon here on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The largest of the salmon species is the much sought after Chinook/King salmon which can weigh up to 60 pounds. Local First Nations consider the salmon to be one of the most important totem figures because it feeds humans, animals, birds and sea faring mammals. After the salmon spawn, they leave two things behind along the river beds: their teeth and their vertebrae. Many artists have used these items to make jewellery or as added realism in their sculptures.
