Icon
The painting 'ICON' was inspired by thinking about labels, especially the labels a woman bears. The collaged images are from my collection of magazines and discarded books I have gathered over many years. They include the 'iconic' mother, teacher, nurse as well as recognized famous women: Marie Curie, Indira Gahndi; movie stars etc. including the first woman astronaut and race car driver. The most disturbing images came from my son's skateboard magazines - these young girls were photographed drunk, passedout or nude - we have not come far after all.
In the background are stamped out lines of various objects associated with women.
I have the words in the halo read: WOMAN, FEMALE, GIRL, DAUGHTER, SISTER, AUNT, VIRGIN, MAIDEN, MATRON, SPINSTER, LADY, BRIDE, MOTHER, WENCH, DAME, BROAD, CHICK, DOLL, GAL, LASS, MADAM, DEMSEL, MISTRESS, HARRIDEN, LESBIAN, SHREW, NYMPH,BITCH, VIRAGO, WIFE, SLUT, AMAZON,WITCH, DYKE,SHE, TOMBOY, WHORE, MADONNA
