Pentimento is a term in the art world meaning: "Am underlying image in a painting; part of a painting or original draft that shows through"

I revise quite a lot when I'm painting. I often take my painting to bed where I lay and look at it figuring out what is working or what needs changing. MANY times it's the face. I liked the term 'Pentimento' for that reason - the myriad layers of a painting that can be there yet not quite seen. Sort of like any of us - how we change as we go through life and the layers of time are applied, but always with our basic self showing through.

Literly speaking, this painting is not a true 'pentimento' but the sentiment of there being an underlying layer appeals to me. And, most certainly our 'stories' are based on the layers of our life applied through time. we change the outlines continuously.   - Marla Thirsk -
