Print - Dune Trees at Wickaninnish

This open edition series of prints was created with the intention of serving as keepsakes for those visiting the wild Pacific coast. The selected images capture some of my favorite spots and views of the Pacific Rim, inspired by my upbringing in this breathtaking environment.

Wickaninnish Beach

Wickaninnish Beach stands out as one of the most breathtaking destinations in all of Canada. Nestled within the Pacific Rim Park, between Ucluelet and Tofino, this sandy expanse stretches for miles, offering an uninterrupted view as far as the eye can see. It has held a magical allure for both visitors to the region and locals alike for decades.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Wickaninnish Beach had a different charm, with people driving and even camping directly on the beach. Over the years, it has evolved into a popular destination, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors during its peak seasons. Today, visitors stay at the numerous resorts, Airbnb accommodations and campgrounds. The once free-spirited camping has transformed into a more structured experience, with paid parking lots and well-maintained facilities, all managed and controlled by Parks Canada.
Despite the changes, Wickaninnish Beach retains its natural beauty and continues to captivate those who venture to its shores. It stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of the Pacific Rim, offering a blend of serene landscapes and vibrant coastal culture that has enchanted generations of beachgoers.
The image I present here captures the essence of the wind-blown trees at Wickaninnish, particularly those near the sand dunes. In my childhood, this place held a special magic as we ran up and down the sandy hills, engaging in games, like capture the flag, with friends. Returning to the dunes as an adult, the hills of sand may not seem as towering as the memories suggest, but the sentimental value of this place remains deeply ingrained in my heart.
Today, my own children have the privilege of playing on the same beach and running along the sand dunes, creating new memories intertwined with the timeless beauty of Wickaninnish. The continuity of this tradition adds an extra layer of significance to this coastal haven, making it a cherished part of our generational family history. Wickaninnish Beach stands as a living canvas where generations come together to share in the joy of play and the enduring enchantment of the wind-sculpted trees along a beach and sea as far as the eyes can see.

Growing up in this coastal region, I have always been captivated by the beauty of the trees--how they grow, persevere, and are shaped by the extreme coastal weather, including rain and wind. Additionally, I've developed a profound appreciation for the layering of silhouettes against our skies. As a result, some of these prints emphasize the simplicity of these natural elements.
The original black and white prints are crafted using various mediums, ranging from photography to digital painting to pen and ink. To ensure longevity, they are printed on archival paper with archival inks, promising a lasting legacy that should endure for decades. Each print aims to encapsulate the essence and charm of the Pacific coast, allowing visitors to carry a piece of this awe-inspiring landscape with them. -Katsumi Kimoto -
