Historically, the coastal sea otter was highly valued for its fur. The fur trading practices of the 19th century brought the species close to extinction, and in fact the animal was extirpated from Clayoquot Sound. Today, they are slowly growing in numbers. Sea otters feed on sea urchins. Seals and sea lions feed mostly on salmon. Seals and sea lions can be seen lounging on the rocks or swimming in local harbours as they hunt for fish.
