About This Category
There are two lighthouses located on the Esowista Peninsula.
Tofino's lighthouse is on Lennard Island, a couple miles off Cox Bay and Chesterman Beach. Lennard Island Lighthouse was established in 1904.
Ucluelet's lighthouse is located on Amphitrite Point and was established in 1906.
Both lighthouses were de-commissioned by the Canadian Coast Guard in 2004; their foghorns no longer call out warnings to mariners. Nevertheless, their beacons can still be seen flashing at night. The lighthouses signify the presence of treacherous reefs while also pointing the way to safe harbours. Thus they remain important monuments for all those who travel by water.
To access Lennard Island you would require a boat or helicopter, but you can walk to Amphitrite Point Lighthouse from the Wild Pacific Trail. The name Amphitrite, from a Greek myth, means sea-goddess, wife of Poseidon
