About This Category
Symbols: air, freedom, flight, migration, a great journey
Hummingbird: symbol: air, messenger of hope and joy, insight and wisdom, continuity and infinity, healer.
Local interest: Some Anna's hummingbirds remain on the coast year-round but the Rufous hummingbirds arrive just ahead of Spring Equinox.
Kingfisher: Symbol: air, abundance and prosperity, messenger of peace, hope and love
Local interest: Kingfishers can be found along the shores of inlets and down at the docks bordering the town's harbour.
Robin: Symbol: new beginnings, renewal, joy and hope
Local interest: though he resides on the west coast year-round, Robin marks the beginning of spring and can be seen on the ground as he listens for earthworms. He has a beautiful song.
Local interest: The Tofino Mudflats, Arakun Mudflats in Meares Island's Lemmens Inlet, and Clayoquot Sound in general are crucial stopovers for migrating shorebirds to rest and feed during their monumental journeys. Other birds - eagles, herons, gulls, hummingbirds, kingfishers, hawks, ospreys, corvids, songbirds of the forest - all feature often in west coast art. Tofino has a Shorebird festival every May.
